Typed caption affixed at lower margin: "SAN DIEGO, CALIF., FEB. 16 - TITLE WITHDRAWN - Archie Moore indicated in his San Diego home yesterday that he doesn't want the National Boxing Assn. to take his light heavyweight title away. However, the NBA announced tonight it had vacated Moore's title because of his failure to defend within prescribed six-month period...." Dated in pencil (unknown hand) at lower margin: "1960". Although Moore was stripped of his light heavyweight title by the NBA in 1960, he won three of his four fights that year and was reinstated as the light heavyweight champ in 1961. He fought two fights in that division before successfully defending his title, but Moore was again stripped of his title in 1962. Thereafter, he fought solely in the heavyweight division. Archie Moore, born Archibald Wright, was World Light Heavyweight Champion from 1952-1960. His first professional bout was in 1936 at age 22. Moore fought 220 times with a record 145 KOs. He is the only boxer to have fought both Rocky Marciano (1955) and Muhammad Ali (1962), losing to both. Moore retired in 1963 and turned to writing and acting. He received excellent reviews for his role as Jim, the runaway slave, in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in 1960, and he guest starred in television series in both dramatic and comedic parts. Moore died in 1998 at the age of 84. Minor surface creases (most not evident head on). Light "silvering" of image. Lightly soiled at blank margins, chipped at upper blank edge.
