ARIEL DORFMANThe Argentina-born writer and social activist signed this index card Inscribed Signature: “To Joe/ Ariel/ Dorfman”. 6x4 index card. Ariel Dorfman (b. 1942) was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but his family moved to Chile soon after he was born. Government upheaval in his home country would go on to dominate his life. He earned United States citizenship in 2004, but has been teaching at Duke University since 1985. In 1971, he published How to Read Donald Duck, a critique of the United States' imperialist foreign policy through the frame of the popular Disney character and his uncle Scrooge McDuck. The book is considered to exhibit communist leanings by some. An advisor to Chilean President Salvador Allende, he was supposed to be at the country's presidential palace the night of the coup led by Augusto Pinochet. After a decade of moving from place to place, he earned the teaching position at Duke University. His publications include the memoir Heading South, Looking North (1998), My House Is On Fire (1990), and Widows (1983). Some of his publications have been turned into films, including My House Is On Fire (1997), which he directed. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
