Photograph signed: "Brauer". B/w, 6x4. Arik Brauer (b.1929) is an Austrian artist, poet, and performer who is a co-founder of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism with Ernst Fuchs, Rudolf Hausner, Wolfgang Hutter and Anton Lehmden. An inventive surrealist during the reign of abstraction of the 1950s and 60s, Brauer made his solo American debut in 1982, premiering in shows across the country. His most coveted works include Brauerhaus in Gumpendorferstraße and Rathaus Voitsberg (both Vienna). In film he's written and composed soundtracks for a variety of works, and earned appearances in a few Austrian TV comedies. He has been awarded the City of Vienna Prize for Visual Arts (1979), Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art (2002) and the Golden Medal of Honour for Services to the City of Vienna (2011).
