ARISTIDE BRIAND. Signature: "Varin 8 February 1923/Aristide Briand", 4¼x2¾ card. Toned at right and lower edges. Otherwise, fine condition. Accompanied by unsigned calling card with printed name, Aristide Briand. Mounting tape remnants at edges. Paper thinned in upper left corner. Otherwise, fine condition. French attorney, journalist and statesman Aristide Briand (1862-1932) served in 26 ministries, including seven terms as Prime Minister of France between 1909 and 1929. Noted for his brilliant oratory, personal diplomacy and ability to attack the heart of a problem, Briand became a moving force in French affairs, from the separation of church and state to world peace. In 1925, Briand as Foreign Minister negotiated with other European powers, including Germany, the Locarno Pact, a series of arbitration treaties designed to prevent another war. On December 1, as Premier, he signed the Pact, and was awarded the 1926 Nobel Peace Prize, which he shared with German Foreign Minister Gustav Stresemann. Seeking to build on his success, he met with U.S. Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg to develop the Kellogg-Briand Pact for renunciation of war (1927-1928). However, he was unsuccessful in seeing his European Union proposal accepted by the League of Nations in 1930. Two items.
