ARLEEN WHALEN
Studio photo announcing her screen debut in Kidnapped, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/Sincerely,/Arleen Whalen". B/w, 8x10. Captioned in lower margin. Publicity release printed on verso states that Whelan "makes her film debut - as the leading lady opposite Warner Baxter in the film version of Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Kidnapped,' one of the most important productions on Darryl Zanuck's schedule for Sprint release.' Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: December 8, 1938. Arleen Whelan (1914-1993), a redheaded American actress, starred in B movies and played secondary leads in top flight films from the late 1930s through the 1950s. Her noteworthy films include Kidnapped (1938), Young Mr. Lincoln (1939), The Senator was Indiscreet (1947) and The Sun Shines Bright (1953). Fox often cast her as an Irish lass or pioneer woman. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Scattered creases and surface marks. Otherwise, fine condition.
