Arlen Specter (1930-2012), who was assistant counsel to the Warren Commission investigating the assassination of President Kennedy, represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate from 1981 to 2011. He formerly chaired the Select Committee on Intelligence (1995-1997) and the Committee on Veterans Affairs. A political centrist Specter survived a tough Republican Primary against a more conservative challenger in 2004. He lost the Democratic Senate primary in 2010 to a more liberal challenger, who then lost in the general election to a more conservative Republican (Pat Toomey). DIRECTLY FROM THE SALE OF THE ESTATE OF DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN. Moynihan (1927-2003) represented New York in the U.S. Senate as a Democrat for four terms (1977-2001).
