Ouimet, 25-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Brookline, Massachusetts, June 13, 1988, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. ARNOLD PALMER, the first to capture four Masters titles (1958, 1960, 1962, 1964) in 48 consecutive Masters starts, also competed in 19 international tours, winning the British Open in 1961 and 1962. Credited with popularizing professional golf during the late 1950s and 1960s, his large and enthusiastic following of fans became known as "Arnie's Army". "Slammin' Sammy" SAM SNEAD (1912-2002) won both the Masters and the PGA three times and the British Open once. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1953. After winning the PGA Championship in his finest season ever (1993), he was diagnosed with lymphoma. His book, Zinger, describes his successful struggle against cancer and his golf comeback.
