Cover of the June 1983 issue of "Golf Monthly" magazine, which pictured the two golfers, whom the magazine billed as "Birkdale's Honorary Champions". The upcoming British Open held July 14-17, 1983 at the famed Royal Birkdale golf course in England would be won by Tom Watson. The charismatic Palmer had captured the first of his two successive British Open titles at Birkdale in 1961 (a plaque on the 16th hole commemorates a brilliant shot he made during that event). Legendary golfer ARNOLD PALMER (1929-2016) won seven major championships during his career, including four Masters Tournament (1958, 1960, 1962, 1964). His 62 PGA Tour victories rank fifth all time, behind Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Sam Snead. Palmer was the first golfer to earn more than $1,000,000 in PGA tournament money. He is credited with popularizing professional golf during the late 1950s and 1960s. Palmer even has a drink named after him! Australian golfer Peter Thomson (1929-2018) won the British Open five times between 1954 and 1965, including three consecutive trophies (1954-1956). He won the national championship tourneys of nine different countries, notching the New Zealand title nine times. Thomson also had good success on the senior circuit (12 wins) and has been a prolific golf writer for over half a century. He entered the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988.
