ART BUCHWALD The winner of the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Outstanding Commentary signed this typed letter Typed Letter signed: "Art B". One page. 7¼x10½. Washington, District of Columbia. Dated September 25, 1967. On personal letterhead to "Dear Miss Hershan". In Full: "I did not know Eleanor Roosevelt at all. I met her once or twice but unfortunately I have nothing that could add to your book. If I did, I certainly would be happy to add to it, but I must be honest and say that I don't have any stories. Sincerely yours." Art Buchwald (1926-2007), a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, spent most of the 1950s in Paris, writing various columns referring to life in the United States and Europe. After returning to the United States from Europe in 1962, he began a syndicated humor column heavy on political satire. Based at The Washington Post, Buchwald appeared in over 500 newspapers at his peak. In 1982, Buchwald was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Outstanding Commentary. He wrote over forty books, his last one titled Beating Around the Bush (2005). These books include various anecdotes about Buchwald's experiences as a member of the press, including an insightful 1959 interview with Elvis Presley in Paris, France. In early 2006, Buchwald entered hospice, refusing dialysis for his failing kidneys and other extreme treatments to prolong his life. He continued to give television interviews and write occasional columns until he passed away. Light corner creases. Lightly toned at upper edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
