ART CARNEY
Black and white publicity photograph of an older Carney smoking a cigar
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/Linda/Best Wishes/Art Carney". B/w with brown hue, 8x10 overall, image 7½x8¾ (one surface). ©1980, United Artists Corporation. Captioned at lower margin. In 1980, Carney appeared in two feature films, Defiance and Roadie, and he starred in two made-for-TV movies, Alcatraz: The Whole Shocking Story and Fighting Back. Stage, screen and television actor Art Carney (1918-2003) began his show business career as a comedian, moving into a sidekick role for others. While serving in WWII, Carney was hit by shrapnel (leaving him with a slight limp) during the Normandy landing. After the war he found much work on Broadway, both as a dramatic and comic actor. He is best known, however, for his role as Ed Norton, Jackie Gleason's pal, on the classic 1950s TV sitcom, The Honeymooners. Later, personal problems caused him to leave the Broadway run of The Odd Couple (Carney had originated the role of Felix Unger in 1965). He soon returned to work as an actor, going on to win the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance as a 72-year-old in Harry and Tonto in 1974. Carney also won several Emmy Awards for his work on TV, and he was nominated for the 1969 Best Actor Tony Award. Lightly creased at blank margins and corners. Surface creases and striations (most not evident head on), some at facial image. Overall, fine condition.
