Black and white photograph of Art Carney and Jackie Gleason [not signing] from The Honeymooners
Photograph signed: "Art Carney/'Ed Norton'". Color, 10x8. Pictured with Jackie Gleason, his co-star on The Honeymooners. The Honeymooners was a comedy sketch originally seen on the Dumont series, Cavalcade of Stars (1950-1952), hosted by Jackie Gleason. Gleason continued the sketch in the second half of his own variety hour, The Jackie Gleason Show (1952-1955). During the 1955-1956 season, 39 half-hour Honeymooners sketches were filmed before a live audience. These classic shows have been syndicated and, almost 50 years later, thrive in reruns. Distinguished actor Art Carney (1918-2003) began his show business career as a comedian, moving into a sidekick role for others. While serving in WWII, Carney was hit by shrapnel (leaving him with a slight limp) during the Normandy landing. After the war he found much work on Broadway, both as a dramatic and comic actor. He is best known, however, for his role as Ed Norton, Jackie Gleason's pal in The Honeymooners. Later, personal problems caused Carney to leave the Broadway run of The Odd Couple. He soon returned to work, going on the win the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance as a 72-year-old in Harry and Tonto (1974). Carney also won several Emmy Awards for his television work. Fine condition.
