ART CARNEY
Black and white publicity photograph of Carney and [Gleason] in
The Honeymooners
Photograph signed: "Art Carney". B/w, 10x8. Shown with co-star
Jackie Gleason in scene from The Honeymooners (1953-1957), which
began as a series of skits on Gleason's TV show and became one of America's most
beloved sitcoms. An inscription has been added for Gleason in an unknown hand.
Stage, screen and television actor Art Carney (1918-2003) began his show
business career as a comedian, moving into a sidekick role for others. While
serving in WWII, Carney was hit by shrapnel (leaving him with a slight limp)
during the Normandy landing. After the war he found much work on Broadway, both
as a dramatic and comic actor. He is best known, however, for his role as Ed
Norton, Jackie Gleason's pal, on the classic 1950s TV sitcom, The
Honeymooners. Later, personal problems caused him to leave the Broadway
run of The Odd Couple (Carney had originated the role of Felix Unger in
1965). He soon returned to work as an actor, going on to win the Best Actor
Academy Award for his performance as a 72-year-old in Harry and Tonto
in 1974. Carney also won several Emmy Awards for his work on TV, and he
was nominated for the 1969 Best Actor Tony Award. Fine
condition.
