ART ARAGON
Signed b/w photo of Aragon in a fighting stance
Photograph signed "Art Aragon". B/w, 7¾x10 overall, 7½x9½ image, one
surface. Aragon (1927-2008) was boxing's "Golden Boy" prior to Oscar De
La Hoya (though Twenties heavyweight Jack Demave was the first to use the
nickname.) Aragon was a colorful and extremely popular contender in both the
Lightweight and Welterweight divisions, based out of Los Angeles during the
1950's. In his sole title shot, Aragon was completely dominated by Jimmy
Carter, whom he previously had defeated. Aragon was accused of fixing fights at
numerous times during his career. He was convicted in 1957 of offering another
fighter $500 to lose a fight the previous year; this conviction was later
overturned on appeal. Aragon's professional record was 87-18-6 (60 kayos). He
also had a fairly extensive list of TV and movie credits between 1952 and 1980,
most of them single-episode parts in TV series but also including The
Ring (1952) and Fat City (1972). He went into the bail bonds business
after retiring. Errors in negative were reproduced in photograph. Otherwise in
fine condition.
