Gumby creator signs a first day cover honoring "Volunteer to help Others" in 1974
First Day Cover signed: "Art Clokey", 6½x3¾. FDC honoring "Volunteer to help Others", 1.8-cent embossed postage and 10-cent Flag stamp affixed, postmarked Cincinnati, OH, August 23, 1974, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Art Clokey (1921-2010), a pioneer in "claymation", is best known as the creator of Gumby, a green clay figure that appeared in stop action animation on TV and in a 1995 film (Gumby: The Movie). In 1953, while a student at USC, Clokey made the experimental claymation film, Gumbasia, a tribute to Walt Disney's 1940 animated classic, Fantasia. Gumby made his TV debut in 1956 on The Howdy Doody Show, and he and his sidekick, Pokey, went on to star in two of their own TV series, The Gumby Show (1957) and Gumby Adventures (1988). In addition to Gumby and his friends, Clokey also created Davey & Goliath (1962-1977), a children's series funded by the Lutheran Church. Lightly rippled. Fine condition.
