ARTHUR GORE (8TH EARL OF ARRAN)
The 8th Earl of Arran who advocated interesting bills during his reign signed this piece of paper in blue ink
Signature: "Arran" in blue ink. 1¾x½ scrap of paper. Arthur Gore, 8th Earl of Arran (1910-1983) was a Conservative whip in the House of Lords. In 1958 he succeeded his brother to become the 8th Earl of Arran and became an active member of the House of Lords. A passionate advocate of homosexual rights, he thrice introduced a Sexual Offences Bill. A legislative bill decriminalizing homosexual acts was finally passed in 1967. He was Press Attaché to the British Legation to Lisbon between 1941 and 1942 and later served as Director of the Secretariat, Central Office of Information between 1945 and 1949. Arran was the sponsor in the House of Lords of Leo Abse's 1967 private member's bill which decriminalized homosexual acts between two consenting adults. Lightly toned. Edges irregular. Otherwise, fine condition.
