ARTHUR GORE (8TH EARL OF ARRAN)
The 8th Earl of Arran who advocated interesting bills during his reign signs this typed letter and handwrites the greeting in blue ink
Typed letter signed: "Yours sincerely/Arran" in blue ink. 4¾x5. North Cape, September 25, 1972. Typed on Harmsworth House letterhead to "Dear Mr. Croxford", in full: "Thank you for your letter. I should have answered it long ago, and indeed I did in fact write to you though the words I used were not taken down on the tape recorder. And so I have to write all over again. You have indeed had an interesting life and I wonder which part of it you have enjoyed most. Are you glad that you have done so many things or would you have preferred to stay in one profession? My signature and also a copy of my column is attached. [not included]" Arthur Gore, 8th Earl of Arran (1910-1983) was a Conservative whip in the House of Lords. In 1958 he succeeded his brother to become the 8th Earl of Arran and became an active member of the House of Lords. A passionate advocate of homosexual rights, he thrice introduced a Sexual Offences Bill. He married Fiona Colquhoun, daughter of Sir Ian Colquhoun. He was Press Attaché to the British Legation to Lisbon between 1941 and 1942 and later served as Director of the Secretariat, Central Office of Information between 1945 and 1949. Arran was the sponsor in the House of Lords of Leo Abse's 1967 private member's bill which decriminalized homosexual acts between two consenting adult males. He also sponsored a bill for the protection of badgers. Lightly toned. Edges irregular. Horizontal fold across center. Newspaper clipping affixed. Adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
