ARTHUR AUSTIN WHITTEMORE
The pianist and one half of a duo with Jack Lowe signs this handwritten letter accepting an invitation to a reception but explaining they can't stay long
Autograph letter signed: “Arthur Whittemore” in blue ink. 7x10. Written on personal letterhead to “Dear Mr. Bartholamew”, in full:Thank you for your invitation to a reception following our concert on October third. We shall be happy to attend, but since we shall drive back to New York that same evening, we hope you will understand if we cannot stay too long. We are looking forward to Lansdale- it is the opening concert of our new season. Best wishes-“. Arthur Austin Whittemore (1915-1984) was a concert pianist. He appeared most often as a duo with Jack Lowe. Both were students at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester and together they made their debut at Town Hall in New York in 1940. After serving in the Navy during World War II, they returned to the concert stage, where they averaged more than 70 concerts a year in the United States, Canada and Europe. They performed with virtually every major symphony orchestra in the United States, were the first duo-pianists to be invited to appear in concert in New York City's Central Park, and were the first piano duo to appear at the White House, at the invitation of President Richard Nixon. The Austin-Whittemore house where he grew up is now a historical building in Vermillion, South Dakota. Lightly toned. Corners rounded. Normal mailing folds. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
