Typed letter signed "Arthur Bourchier". Pencil notations in top left corner. 1 page, 7¾x9¾, thin paper. Globe Theatre, London, England, March 4, 1910. In full: "Dear Mr. Smalley, How very nice of you to write me such a charming letter, which I greatly value, and which I am sure the author will be most delighted to read. With kind regards, Believe me, Yours very truly,". London's Globe Theatre was renamed the Gielgud Theatre in 1994. British actor Bourchier (1863-1927) was equally adept in both comedy and tragedies and noted for his interpretations of both Shakespearean and contemporary plays. He got his professional start in 1889 as Jaques in Shakespeare's As You Like It and continued acting, mostly in Great Britain, into the 1920s, often with his first wife Violet Vanbrugh as his leading lady; the two had at least two command performances before King Edward VII. Bourchier was also the manager of several West End theatres, including the Royalty Theatre, the Garrick and the Strand, and starred in and directed at least one film, a 1913 German adaptation of MacBeth. Lightly toned, foxed and creased. Light tears at right and left edges and light nick at left edge; tear along right edge touches signature. Light discoloration along left edge. Lightly creased and rounded corners with missing top right corner. Adhesive residue on verso (no show-through). Folded in quarters and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
