ARTHUR BRISBANE
Typically pithy retort: "My opinion as to a morality play would be
worthless," adding that "the immorality play" is more popular now.
Typed Letter Signed: "A. Brisbane". 1p. 8½x11, New York Evening Journal letterhead, signed in blue
pencil. New York, New York, 1926 April 16. To: Emanuel Rubin, Esq. Los
Angeles, California. In Full: "My dear Sir: I have just received your
letter on my return from the East. I am afraid my opinion as to a morality play
would be worthless. Yours very truly, P.S. I may add that the IMMORALITY
play seems to be the popular thing now." Arthur Brisbane (1864-1936)
is widely considered one of the progenitors of modern yellow journalism, with
its focus on blaring headlines and sensational stories, as well as modern
newspaper journalism, with its emphasis on short sentences, eye-catching leads
and lots of pictures and photos. He began his journalism career as a
reporter at the New York Sun in 1883. He was made managing editor of
William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal in 1897. He used his
position to help foment the Spanish-American War. Brisbane was also one of
the highest-paid newspaper editors of his day - a fact directly linked to the
circulation of the Journal - and his editorial column Today
(1917-1936) was syndicated in over 1,000 newspapers. Horizontal and
vertical fold creases. Horizontal and vertical fold creases affecting signature.
