Eisenhower's Postmaster General signs an FDC for philatelic
convention, with a cachet bearing his facsimile signature on a first-day
certification for two new Statue of Liberty stamps.
First Day Cover signed: "Arthur E. Summerfield", 6x3½. FDC
honoring the Fifth International Philatelic Exhibition, and bearing two US
Liberty stamps issued on the occasion. Summerfield's facsimile signature appears
under the stamps on a special convention display. Postmarked New York, N. Y.,
April 28, 1956, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Arthur E. Summerfield (1899-1972)
served as chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1952 and
1953. During the 1952 republican National Convention, the former
gubernatorial candidate and state delegation chairman garnered Michigan support
for Dwight Eisenhower as President, playing a large role in Eisenhower's
nomination. He was rewarded for his work for the party by being appointed
Postmaster General (1953-1961). In that office he worked to mechanize many
postal operations and to promote the public image of what was then the Post
Office Department. Fine condition.
