First Day Cover Signed: “Arthur E. Summerfield”. 6½x3¾. This First Day Cover celebrates the 1964 World's Fair in New York City, New York. A printed 2¾x2¼ b/w image features a caption that describes the image: “His Holiness Pope Paul VI/ and President John F. Kennedy/ viewing model of Michelangelo's 'Pieta'/ July 2, 1963./ (Original now at the World's Fair)”. Postmarked April 22, 1964. World's Fair, New York. Five-cent stamp affixed. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Arthur E. Summerfield (1899-1972) served as chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1952 and 1953. During the 1952 Republican National Convention he garnered support from Michigan voters for Dwight Eisenhower's bid for the Oval Office, playing a large role in Eisenhower's nomination. He was rewarded for his work for the party by being appointed Postmaster General (1953-1961). As Postmaster General, he modernized the mail sorting system and improved the United States Post Service's image via the ABC anthology series The Mail Story: Handle with Care (1954) and a new red, white, and blue color scheme. Glue on verso shows back of envelope. Light wear on verso. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
