ARTHUR JONES-WILLIAMS
Signed autograph letter on Royal Air Force stationery, extending a dinner invitation (1929), the year he became a national hero and just weeks before he died attempting to best his own flight record
Autograph Letter signed: "Arthur G. Jones-Williams", 4½x7. 23 Fighter Squadron, Royal Air Force, Kenley, Surrey (England), 1929 October 29. To "Dear Paxton", in full: "Would you care for dinner here at 8 o'clock on Friday Nov 8th? It is just an ordinary guest night affair. Yours truly". Arthur Gordon Jones-Williams (1898-1929) was a British air ace of World War I, shooting down 11 German planes in combat over France. He received two Military Crosses for gallantry within a span of 2 months, and received the O.B.E. in June 1927. In 1929, Squadron-Leader Jones-Williams and his co-pilot, Lt. Norman Jenkins, established a non-stop flight record, traveling from London to Karachi (4,130 miles) in 50 hours/48 minutes. In December 1929, Jones-Williams crashed to his death in Tunisia while attempting to best his own distance record. Readily available sources give only the month of the crash, not the date, but this letter could not have been written more than 2 months before his last fatal flight. Lightly soiled. Horizontal fold crease. Lightly creased and worn at corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
