ARTHUR HAMMERSTEIN
Handwritten letter candidly explaining the reasons he has decided
"not to produce again."
Autograph Letter signed: "Arthur H", 1 page, 7x11. Great
Neck, New York, 1940 May 23. On personal letterhead to "Dear Ed",
in full: "Sorry to say but I've decided not to produce again. The
percentage of success and the jeopardy to what is left of the bank account
'plus age' forced me to decide reluctantly. I thank you just the same.
Sincerely." Arthur Hammerstein (1872-1955), the son of opera
impresario Oscar Hammerstein I and the uncle of librettist and producer Oscar
Hammerstein II, was himself a producer of operettas, notably The
Firefly (1912), Katinka (1915) and Rose Marie (1924). He also
produced a film, Lottery Bride (1930). In 1940 he wrote the song
Because of You, which became a big hit for Tony Bennett in 1951. Multiple
