ARTHUR HONEGGER
Two notes handwritten by Honegger in translated German. One is dated 1949 and was written in Paris, the other is signed.
Autograph note signed "Art Honegger". 7¼x5 piece of paper with two smaller notes (2¾x1¼ and 6¾x1½) mounted to it. Smaller note is dated July 12, 1949. Both notes are in German and are translated. Smaller note in full: "Paris IX, 71 Bulevard de Clichy/July 12, 49". Larger note in full: "Received. Send your Doct my best thank and the greetings from your obedient." The larger note appears to be clipped from a larger letter. Honegger (1892-1955, born Oscar-Arthur Honegger in Le Havre, France) was a composer born of Swiss parents but who spent a good deal of his life in Paris. He was a member of Les Six, a group of six Montparnasse composers whose music was a reaction against both Wagner and Impressionist music, after World War I. A prolific composer, Honegger wrote operas, including1927's Antigone, oratorios, including Cantique des cantiques (1938); and orchestral music, including Pacific 231 (1924) and Rugby (1928), much of it combining French avant-garde with the big sounds and massed singing of German music. Lightly toned and creased. Mounting card is folded once horizontally and unfolded; fold is worn and torn. Smaller note has lower right corner folded over. Larger note is folded in half vertically and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
