20-cent stamps affixed, postmarked Dallas, Texas, October 24, 1994, FIRST DAY OF
ISSUE. Arthur Kornberg, of Stanford University, and Severo Ochoa
(1905-1993), of the New York University College of Medicine, were
co-recipients of the 1959 Nobel Prize in Medicine "for their discovery of
the mechanisms in the biological synthesis of ribonucleic acid and
deoxiribonucleic acid" (the biological synthesis of RNA and DNA). Kornberg,
who developed DNA in the laboratory, served as Professor and Chairman of
Stanford's Department of Biochemistry for ten years. Fine
