ARTHUR LAURENTS. First Day Cover signed: "Arthur Laurents", 6½x3½. FDC honoring Paul Laurence Dunbar 1872-1906 American Poet, 10-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Dayton, Ohio, May 1, 1975, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Writer/director Laurents' play, West Side Story, was the basis for the Tony and Academy Award-winning musical. He wrote a number of other plays, including Home of the Brave (1949) and Gypsy (based on Gypsy Rose Lee's autobiography). Laurents was the screenwriter for a number of films, including Summertime (1955, based on his play, The Time of the Cuckoo), Anastasia (1956), The Way We Were (1973, adapted from his novel), The Turning Point (1977, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay) and The Jazz Singer (1980). Fine condition.
