ARTHUR LOCKER
The British magazine editor writes to colleague explaining that Lord Tennyson refuses to sit again for a portrait, signs name in black ink
Autograph letter signed: "Arthur Locker" in black ink. 3 pages integral leaf, 3½x4½ folded. Teignmouth, England. August 28, 1883. In part: "Dear Mr. Thomas, I have just had a letter from Hallam Tennyson to say that his father sat very unwillingly (at my request) to Mr. Herkomer, and he flatly refuses to sit again. But he says "when we are not here (that is, at Aldworth, Haslemere) an artist may come and sketch the study". They have just gone away on a tour, so now would be a permissible time if you decide to send Wipman down, and figure could be put in from one of the innumerable photos...I hope to be back in the office on Monday. I think the bathing & fresh air have done me much good...Yours truly". Arthur Locker (1828-1893) was a novelist and journalist, best known for his work as editor of the Graphic. After beginning his career in a mercantile office at Liverpool, Locker emigrated to Australia where he turned to journalism and writing of plays and fiction. He returned to Great Britain in 1861, where he immediately began contributing to newspapers and magazines, earning a permanent position in 1863 at the Times, and moving up to his Graphic position in 1870. His published writings include Sweet Seventeen (1866), On a Coral Reef (1869), Stephen Scudamore the Younger (1871) and The Village Surgeon (1874). Locker was the elder brother of London Lyrics (1857) author, Frederick Locker-Lampson. Normal mailing folds. Bottom edge frayed and slightly torn. Toned. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
