First Day Cover honoring The Liberty Bell on an embossed envelope, 10-cent stamp affixed. Postmarked Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; December 5, 1973. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Born Arthur Moses Teichman in New York City, ARTHUR MURRAY(1895-1991), turned grace on the dance floor into a booming business. He began teaching dance in 1912. By the 1920s, he had a successful mail order business in dance lessons, sending his famous printed footprints of the dance steps to students. He married his wife KATHRYN MURRAY, another elegant dancer, in 1925.Together they pioneered the hugely successful franchised dance studios which remain popular today. The Murrays introduced several new dances, including "the Big Apple," and helped to popularize Latin dance in the U.S. Kathryn hosted Arthur Murray's Dance Party on television (1950-1961), initially buying air time but soon attracting sponsors for the popular show. The Murrays taught dance to dozens of celebrities and many thousands of Americans. Arthur died in 1991, Kathryn in 1999. Top right corner slightly worn. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
