ARTHUR MURRAY
The dancer turned celebrity signs his name with a short note on Roney Plaza Hotel letterhead
Autograph Note signed: "Arthur Murray", 1p, 7¼x10½. On letterhead of Roney Plaza Hotel, Miami Beach Florida. No date. To "Dear Miss Spencer". In full: "This is the way I write and there's nothing I can do about it." Born Arthur Moses Teichman in New York City, Arthur Murray (1895-1991) turned grace on the dance floor into a booming business. He began teaching dance in 1912. By the 1920s, he had a successful mail order business in dance lessons, sending his famous printed footprints of the dance steps to students. He married his wife Kathryn, another elegant dancer, in 1925. Together they pioneered the hugely successful franchised dance studios which remain popular today. The Murrays introduced several new dances, including "the Big Apple," and helped to popularize Latin dance in the U.S. Kathryn hosted Arthur Murray's Dance Party on television (1950-1961), initially buying air time but soon attracting sponsors for the popular show. The Murrays taught dance to dozens of celebrities and many thousands of Americans. Arthur died in 1991, Kathryn in 1999. Written upside down on stationery. Lightly creased and soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
