ARTHUR P. "DEAN STANLEY" STANLEY
Handwritten letter from the Dean of Westminster to a friend regarding
some unsent mail. Dated 1868
Autograph letter signed: "A.P. Stanley", in black ink, 1 page,
4½x7¼ affixed to 4¾x7¾ sheet. April 26, 1868. In full: "My dear Sir, I
will address the [illegible] in mail, [illegible] Yours
faithfully". Arthur P. Stanley (1815-1881), often called "Dean
Stanley" due to his Dean of Westminster position, was a clergyman and church
historian. He was appointed regius professor of ecclesiastical
history at Oxford in 1856, a position he held until 1863. It was there he began
his History of the Jewish Church, publishing the first volume in
1863 and the second in 1865. Stanley became Dean of Westminster in 1863,
publishing Memorials of Westminster Abbey in 1865, which still
serves today as one of the most comprehensive books about Westminster's history.
