ARTHUR P. "DEAN STANLEY" STANLEY
Rare handwritten letter from the author and clergyman to a friend,
saying a publisher will send him a letter soon. Dated 1962, a year before his
appointment as the Dean of Westminster
Autograph letter signed: "A. P. Stanley", in black ink, 1
page, 4½x7. July 10, 1862. In full: "On the in of a distant journey, I
write you, in just [illegible], a light preface. The publisher will send
you the [illegible] delayed by this journey, will follow at a
[illegible]. Yours faithfully". Arthur P. Stanley (1815-1881),
often called "Dean Stanley" due to his Dean of Westminster position, was a
clergyman and church historian. He was appointed regius professor
of ecclesiastical history at Oxford in 1856, a position he held until 1863. It
was there he began his History of the Jewish Church, publishing
the first volume in 1863 and the second in 1865. Stanley became Dean of
Westminster in 1863, publishing Memorials of Westminster Abbey in
1865, which still serves today as one of the most comprehensive books about
Westminster's history. Multiple folds. Lightly toned. Left corners torn. Slight
surface creases. Adhesive residue on left margin on verso. Pencil marking on
upper right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
