Rubinstein signs a postcard of Franz Schubert in 1931
Postcard signed: "Recuerdo de/Arturo Rubinstein/Cordoba 22.8.31". Color, 3½x5½. Addressed on verso (unknown hand). Postcard depicts Franz Schubert. Rubinstein had given his first concerts in Spain in 1915 before going on a well-received tour of South America. A lover of the country and Spanish music, he became a frequent visitor and bought a home in Marbella. Rubinstein learned Spanish and played the works of Spanish composers, including Manuel de Falla, with whom he became friends, and considered it a great compliment when Spanish audiences proclaimed that he played "like a born Spaniard". In 1932, the year after he signed this card, Rubinstein married Nela Mlynarski, the daughter of Polish composer Emil Mlynarski. Considered one of the greatest concert pianists of the 20th century, Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982) is best known for his interpretations of Chopin and the songs of Franz Schubert. His huge repertoire included Beethoven, Mozart, Ravel and Stravinsky as well, and Rubenstein made over 200 recordings, selling over ten million copies. The Polish-born American pianist remained at the top of his profession for over 70 years before his death in 1982 at the age of 95. Adequate contrast. Light crease at upper right corner. Fine condition.
