Arthur S. Adams, Provost of Cornell University and President of the University of New Hampshire, wrote this letter on his personalized letterhead in 1973. In it, he responds to the recipient's recommendation to elect Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis to the Hall of Fame for Great Americans.
Autograph letter signed "Arthur S. Adams" in blue ink. 1 page, 7¼x10½, on Adams' personalized stationery. Sept. 21, 1973. Addressed to Mr. Nathan Smith, Woodbridge, New Jersey. In full: "Dear Mr. Smith, I have your letter of September 17 in which you indicated your support of the nomination of Justice Louis D. Brandeis for the Hall of Fame for Great Americans. I shall give careful consideration to your letter when the time comes for me to record my vote. Sincerely.". American educator Adams (1896-1980) was Provost of Cornell University (1945-1948) and President of the University of New Hampshire (1948-1950). A metallurgist, Adams was the first University of New Hampshire president with a science background. During World War II, he was called from a professorship and assistant deanship at Cornell to serve as the Director of Field Administration Training for the U. S. Navy's V12 program, which was instituted to prevent a feared shortage of college-educated officers. He was also an elector for the Hall of Fame for Great Americans at Bronx Community College in New York City. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
