1 page, 6½x9. Eugene, Oregon, 1964 November 25. On letterhead of The
Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare addressed to Mr. Leo J. Sylvor, New
York, New York. In full: "I do want you to know how much I appreciated
your letter of November 26, 1959, enclosing a card which you hand-lettered for
me. It is beautifully done and I am very happy to accept it. I am enclosing an
autographed photograph [not included] as you requested in your letter.
Again, thanks very much for thinking of me. Very sincerely and cordially
yours," In 1939,Arthur S.Flemming (1905-1996) was appointed to the U.S. Civil Service Commission
by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was Eisenhower's Secretary of Health,
Education and Welfare from 1958-1961. Dr. Flemming was the recipient of two
Presidential Medals of Freedom, one in 1957 from President Eisenhower and
the second one bestowed on him in 1994 by President Clinton. Slightly creased.
