Typed Letter Signed: “A. Scargill” 1p, 8¼x11¾. May 20, 1986. On letterhead of the National
Union of Mineworkers. To “Dear Peter”. In full: “Thank you for your letter. I enclose a signed
photograph as requested./ Yours sincerely”. Arthur Scargill (b. 1938) is a British politician and
eminent trade unionist. From 1982 to 2002, he served as president of the National
Union of Mineworkers (NUM). Notably, he played an important role in the organization of
the miners' strike that eventually led to the crumbling of Edward Heath's Conservative
government in March 1974. He was also instrumental in the miners' strike of 1984-1985,
which was ultimately defeated by Thatcher's Conservative government. Scargill went on to
become a prominent leader of the Socialist Labour Party (SLP), founded in 1996. Corners
and edges gently worn. Lightly toned. Slight indentations and scuffing along top edge.
