ARTHUR à BECKETT
Handwritten letter by the Punch columnist, referencing famed
illustrator Henry Furniss
Autograph Letter signed: "Arthur A. Beckett", 1 page, 4½x7.
24 Worcester Road SW [London], 1884 November 14. To "Dear Sir",
in full: "All right. There is nothing in Mr. Furniss' letter that
you have not seen. Don't forget to see me in the morning. I am dead tired. Good
night. Sincerely yours". English journalist and humorist Arthur William à
Beckett (1844-1909) wrote for Punch magazine (1874-1902) and was
editor of the Sunday Times (1891-1895). He wrote several humorous
books, beginning with Comic Guide to the Royal Academy (1864). He also
wrote to comedy plays, and a novel Fallen Among Thieves (1869). Edges
frayed. Harry Furniss (1854-1925) was an illustrator and caricaturist
who drew for Punch from 1880 to 1894. He illustrated two novels by
Lewis Carroll, and - after moving to America - drew the first animated
cartoon film for Thomas Edison. Toned with multiple mailing folds.
