Audubon signs an 1844 receipt acknowledging payment for volumes of his works.
Receipt signed: "John J Audubon", 8x5. New York, 1844 September 28. In full: "To
James Munroe Esqr., For Nos: 98, 99 & 100, "Birds of America" $3.--, For Nos: 6 & 7,
Quadrupeds of America 20.--, (total) $23.--, New York Septr 28. 1844. Recd - Payment".
When ornithological pioneer, John James Audubon signed this receipt for his books in
1844, he was diligently working on what would be his last project: Viviparous
Quadrupeds of North America, plates in two volumes (1842-1845), text in three volumes
(1846-1954). He was assisted by his sons and Reverend John Bachman (1790-1874), a
naturalist and associate of Audubon's since 1831. His previous publication, Birds of
America (1826-1838), in four volumes, each copy costing $1,000, was done from his
watercolors by a London engraver who had engraved the copper plates, impressed them on
paper and hand colored them. Audubon had searched for an American publisher for his
works, but unable to fine one, due to the publishing price of $100,000, he had gone
abroad. Audubon's fantastic and minutely detailed paintings portrayed 1,065 life-sized birds in
natural poses and in their natural habitat.

Signed autograph letter to a biographer concerning photographic plates missing from his
collection
Autograph Letter signed: "Alfred Stieglitz", 2 pages, 8½x11, front and verso (hinged to show
both sides). New York City, 1933 December 18. To his friend (and author) Grace E.
Titus, who was working a book about the innovative photographer. In full, as written:
"Every number of Camera Work was published complete when issued. The way it happens that
Plates are missing is that frequently Camera Work came out of the Bindery with Plates to be
inserted by me personally after binding. Some years ago many of the Insets were either destroyed or
mislaid. Hence the impossibility of completing many issues at present I know of no way of acquiring
missing plates except in keeping one's eyes open for numbers of Camera Work as they may appear
in the market Absolutely complete sets of Camera Work are very, very rare & are priceless. No I
have no reproductions either There are none The Plates in Camera Work for the major part are
photo gravures made directly from original negatives & were made under my direction as were the
prints. -So from a certain point of view many of the Plates might be looked upon as a species of
originals".

palette.
Original Art Signed "Yours faithfully / Frederick Remington / New Rochelle NY Aug 20
'1897" 3 ¾ x 3. Overall size of 9 ½ x 8 ¾. Not framed by the Gallery of History. Fine

in 1886, Remington produced more than 400 illustrations for the nation's ten leading periodicals,
including "Century Magazine", in which Remington illustrated articles written by his friend,
Theodore Roosevelt. Sent to Cuba in the 1890s by newspaper publisher William
Randolph Hearst, who was actively promoting war with Spain, and returning in 1898 to
cover the U.S. campaign against the Spanish, Remington was appalled by war's cruelty.
However, he produced a memorable sculpture, The Bronco Buster, in tribute to Teddy
Roosevelt's leadership of volunteer "Rough Riders" at the Battle of San Juan Hill.
