ARVELL SHAW
B/w full length photo of Arvell Shaw playing bass in a tux with Louis
Armstrong's All-Stars, signed with his "Best Wishes"
Inscribed photograph signed "'Best Wishes/Dell/Arvell/Shaw" in
blue ink. B/w, 8x10 overall, 7½x8½ image, one surface. Captioned:
"ARVELL SHAW featured with/LOUIS ARMSTRONG/Esquire All Stars". Photo
by Associated Booking Corp. Bassist and perennial sideman Shaw
(1923-2002) is probably best known for his long association with Louis
Armstrong. He played tuba in high school, but switched to bass, and played
with Fate Marable in 1942 before serving in the U. S. Navy for three years.
Shaw joined Louis Armstrong's last big band (1945-1947) and was one of
only two members to be retained as a member of the Louis Armstrong All-Stars
(1947-1950). He rejoined Satchmo in 1952, after taking time off to study
music, and toured the world with him until 1956. Shaw also played with Armstrong
from 1962 and 1964, as well as a few other times in the 1960s. He also worked at
CBS with Russ Case, was a member of the Teddy Wilson Trio and played the
Brussels World Fair with Benny Goodman in 1958. Shaw freelanced in New York
after the 1960s until his death. Lightly toned, creased and bowed. Pen skipped
while writing signature, which has low contrast but is legible. Edges are
lightly discolored. Light impressions and scratches on image (not visible
head-on). Otherwise in fine condition.
