Clipped signature of botanist Asa Gray, whose research provided crucial
support for Charles Darwin's theory of evolution
Clipped signature: "Asa Gray". 2¼x1. Gray (1810-1888, born in
Sauquoit, New York) was an American botanist whose discovery of close
affinities between East Asian and North American floras was a key piece of
evidence in favor of evolution. A professor of natural history at Harvard
University (1842-1888) who created Harvard's Department of Botany in
1842, he offered his collections to Harvard in 1864, founding the Herbarium
of Harvard University, which became known as Gray's Herbarium. Stray ink mark
