ANTHONY KENNEDY
1961 American Credo stamp first day cover signed by Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy
First day cover signed "Anthony M Kennedy". 6½x3½ envelope. First day cover for the American Credo series with a b/w cachet and quotation by Patrick Henry at left. Postmarked Richmond, Virginia, Jan. 11, 1961. One four-cent green, white and brown American Credo stamp affixed. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Kennedy, born Anthony McLeod Kennedy in 1936, was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by President Reagan in 1988. He started his tenure on the Court with a highly conservative voting record, voting with Justices Rehnquist and Scalia 90 percent of the time and, with Justice O'Connor, contributing votes to conservative majorities. Later, though, he began to vote more independently and from a civil-libertarian perspective. He also co-authored the court's majority opinion in the 1992 abortion rights case Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey. Kennedy retired from the Court in 2009. Lightly toned, soiled, creased and rippled. Stains from envelope adhesive on verso (no show-through). Rounded and worn corners. Normal postal stamps. Otherwise, fine condition.
