1977 first day cover honoring the Battle of Princeton signed by Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy
First day cover signed "Anthony M Kennedy". Pencil notations in top left corner in unknown hand. 6½x3½ envelope. First day cover honoring the Battle of Princeton with b/w cachet at left. Postmarked Princeton, New Jersey, Jan. 3, 1977. One 13-cent color stamp reproduction of Charles Wilson Peale's George Washington at Princeton affixed. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Anthony M. Kennedy (b. 1936) was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by President Reagan in 1988. He started his tenure on the Court with a highly conservative voting record, voting with Justices Rehnquist and Scalia 90 percent of the time and, with Justice O'Connor, contributing votes to conservative majorities. Later, though, he began to vote more independently and from a civil-libertarian perspective. He also co-authored the court's majority opinion in the 1992 abortion rights case Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey. Kennedy retired from the Court in 2009. Envelope is open and empty. Lightly toned, soiled and rippled. Normal postal stamps. Otherwise, fine condition.
