ARTHUR GOLDBERG, WALTER McCONAUGHY and HAL LAYCOE
Arthur Goldberg, Walter McConaughy, and Hal Laycoe sign an album
leaf.
Signature: "Arthur J. Goldberg", 5x4¼ sheet affixed to 7¾x10 album
leaf, to which a newspaper photo of Goldberg (b/w, 1¾x3¼) is also affixed,
overlapping bottom edge of signature sheet. On verso of mounting sheet are
signature of "Walter P. McConaughy", affixed to 7½x3½ sheet of
captioned pictures of U.S. and Japanese officials, including McConaughy; and an
inscribed signature: "To George/Kindest/Regards/Hal Laycoe/Portland
Buckaroos/1960-61-62", 5¼x2¼ slip with overlapping newspaper photo (b/w,
1¾x6¾) of Laycoe. A labor lawyer, GOLDBERG (1908-1990) served as
President Kennedy's Secretary of Labor (1961-1962) before being appointed
Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. In 1965, he was convinced by LBJ to give
up his lifetime Supreme Court appointment to succeed the late Adlai E. Stevenson
as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Goldberg's frustration at the
continuing escalation of the Vietnam War prompted him to resign his U.N. post in
1968. McCONAUGHY (1908-2000), who signed as Assistant Secretary of
State for Far Eastern Affairs, was a career US Foreign Service officer who
served as Ambassador to several Asian nations, including Burma (1957),
South Korea (1959-1961), Pakistan (1962-1966) and the Republic of China (Taiwan,
1966-1974). Canadian Hal LAYCOE played hockey for the Boston Bruins
(1950-1956) of the National Hockey League, before moving to the coaching
ranks. He was head coach of the Portland Buckaroos in the Western Hockey
League before assuming the same position with a new NHL franchise, the
Vancouver Canucks. While playing for Boston in 1955, Laycoe "high
sticked" Montreal Canadiens superstar Maurice Richard, triggering a brawl in
which Richard slugged a referee and was suspended for the rest of the season and
the playoffs. This incident triggered the "Richard riots" in Montreal,
protesting the suspension, with more than 100 fans arrested. Ink notes (unknown
hand) on both sides. Print and mounting adhesive on verso show through lightly
at Goldberg signature. Frayed left edge where page was removed from a book.
Otherwise, fine condition.
