ARTHUR GOLDBERG
Signature: "Arthur J. Goldberg", on verso of flyer addressed to
visitors to the Fifth Avenue, New York, headquarters of Goldberg's campaign for
Governor against incumbent Nelson Rockefeller, 7x4¼. A labor lawyer, Goldberg
(1908-1990) served as President Kennedy's Secretary of Labor (1961-1962)
before being appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. In 1965,
he was convinced by LBJ to give up his lifetime Supreme Court appointment to
succeed the late Adlai E. Stevenson as U.S. Ambassador to the United
Nations. Goldberg's frustration at the continuing escalation of the Vietnam
War prompted him to resign his U.N. post in 1968. Goldberg was the unsuccessful
Democratic candidate for Governor of New York in 1970. Irregularly cut. Lightly
creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
