In full:"Mrs. Stoughton kindly invites you to her house Friday, where I understand you will meet Aunt Mary & some other friends. Curtis, who had written one of the two dissenting opinions in the 1857 Dred Scott case, resigned due to the bitter feelings engendered by the case. One of the nation's leading lawyers, Curtis was Chief Counsel to Andrew Johnson at the President's impeachment trial in 1868."Silliman's Journal", now called the "American Journal of Science", was the first scientific journal published in the U.S. The Boston Atheneum, a private library, was founded in 1807.
