Former Supreme Court justice Benjamin Robbins Curtis wrote this letter in 1862 to arrange an appointment.
Autograph letter signed "B. R. Curtis". Black ink notations on back of letter and erased pencil at top of page 1 in unknown hand. 2 pages, 4½x7½, 1 sheet folded. April 12, 1862.In full: "Dear Sir Yours of yesterday is rec'd. I had already telegraphed you to come on Monday, & I have now made all necessary arrangements- a new thought which I have engaged that you shall dine with Bartlett on Monday at 6 o'ck & have invited a few good fellows to meet you on Tuesday. I hope Mrs. Stoughton will accompany you. Mrs. Curtis wrote to her yesterday. Yours always". Appointed by Millard Fillmore in 1851, Curtis (1809-1874, born in Watertown, Massachusetts) served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court until he resigned in 1857. Curtis, who had written one of the two dissenting opinions in the 1857 Dred Scott case, resigned due to the bitter feelings engendered by the case. One of the nation's leading lawyers, Curtis was Chief Counsel to Andrew Johnson at the President's impeachment trial in 1868. Lightly toned and creased. Handwriting and signature are lightly smeared but legible. Random ink stains, which touches handwriting but not signature. Lightly discolored at left edge, which touches handwriting but not signature. Ink transference inside letter; show-through touches handwriting but not signature. Folded once horizontally and twice vertically and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
