Benjamin R. Curtis sends an autograph note asking for volume 33 of Silliman's Journal.
Autograph Note Signed: "B R Curtis", 1p, 8x6. No place, 1850 January 21.To the Librarian of the Atheneum. In full: "Please send me 33 vol. Silliman's Journal". Appointed by Millard Fillmore in 1851, Benjamin Robbins Curtis (1809-1874) served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court until he resigned in 1857. Curtis, who had written one of the two dissenting opinions in the 1857 Dred Scott case, resigned due to the bitter feelings engendered by the case. One of the nation's leading lawyers, Curtis was Chief Counsel to Andrew Johnson at the President's impeachment trial in 1868."Silliman's Journal", now called the "American Journal of Science", was the first scientific journal published in the U.S. The Boston Atheneum, a private library, was founded in 1807. Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold touches the "R". Lightly creased, worn and soiled. Irregular lower edge, ¾-inch tear at upper edge (all paper intact). Notes (unknown hand) beneath signature.
