BYRON WHITE
Black and white publicity photograph of Byron White sitting in a chair with
his hands in his lap in his judge's robe.
Photograph signed: "Byron R. White". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 6½x9¼
(one surface). Byron R. White (1917-2002), was the first appointment
to the Supreme Court by President Kennedy and served from 1962 until his
retirement in 1993. White played professional football for the then
Pittsburgh Pirates (now the Steelers) to earn money for law school, and was a
Rhodes Scholar at Oxford until World War II broke out. He returned to the U.S.
and enrolled in Yale Law School in 1940 and also played two seasons with the
Detroit Lions. At the time of his appointment, he was the youngest member (at
age 44) to serve on the Court. Difficult to categorize and suspicious of
ideology, White dissented in such landmark cases as Miranda
(source of the "Miranda warning", 1966) and Roe v. Wade
(1973). Ink slightly smudged at the "e" in White. Lightly creased at blank
margins. Minor surface creases (not evident head on). Pencil notes (unknown
hand) and Library of Congress stamp on verso (no show through). Fine
condition.
