Three justices from the Burger Court sign a philatelic envelope for "A root
of democracy" ... to cast a free ballot 3¢ Americana Series.
Philatelic Envelope signed: "Byron R. White", "Potter Stewart"
and "Lewis F. Powell", 6½x3½. First Day Cover for "A root of
democracy" ... to cast a free ballot 3¢ Americana Series, one 1-cent stamp
depicting the ability to write, one 2-cent stamp depicting freedom to speak out,
two 3-cent stamps depicting to cast a free ballot and one 4-cent stamp depicting
a public that reads affixed, postmarked Saint Louis, Missouri, December 8,
1977, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. These three Associate Justices served together
until 1981 when STEWART retired. This was the last all-male Supreme
Court; upon Stewart's retirement, President Ronald Reagan appointed
SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR as the first woman Justice. Slightly creased
and soiled. Stewart signature has bleed slightly. Pencil and ink notes (unknown
hand) on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
