Signing as Associate Justice, the year he wrote the majority opinion
in Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States
Signature: "David J. Brewer/Associate Justice/Sup. Ct US/Dec. 11,
1892", 4x2½. David J. Brewer (1837-1910), a federal judge in Kansas
from 1861, was elected to the Kansas Supreme Court in 1870. He was
appointed a US circuit court judge by President Arthur (1884), and an
Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by President Harrison (1889, serving
until his death). He was the author of several court opinions, including
Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States (1892), which declared
"general Christianity" to be part of the common law of the United States;
In re Debs (1895), upholding federal injunctions against strikes;
and Muller v. Oregon (1908), validating restrictions on working
hours for women. He was in the 7-1 majority in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896),
which sanctioned segregation. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
