He was appointed a US circuit court judge by President Arthur (1884), and an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by President Harrison (1889, serving until his death). He was the author of several court opinions, including Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States (1892), which declared the US to be a Christian nation; In re Debs (1895), upholding federal injunctions against strikes; and Muller v. Oregon (1908), validating restrictions on working hours for women. Evenly toned with minor stains not affecting signature. Otherwise fine condition.
